Jason pushed his way through the crowds surrounding the dance floor of Sparkles bar and nightclub. It was a bit too crowded for his liking, but it was also the only decent bar in Lipton. So when Jason wanted a drink, it was here that he had to come to. Reaching his intended destination, the bar, he sat down on one of the stools and signaled to the bartender, catching his attention. “Beer please.” Tonight he was fully intending to drink until he was too drunk to even walk home. It was one of his bad days, in his cycles of depression. There was no real reason for it, he’d just woken up feeling miserable and his mood had only gotten worse over the day. His friends knew that there was nothing they could do to pull him out of the blackness of his mood and had learnt to just leave him too it. Unfortunately, when he was like this his temper tending to be short and more than once he’d lashed out at a friend who was trying too hard to cheer him up. Sometimes he just wanted to be left in peace.
The bartender set his drink down in front of him and Jason nodded in thanks. He lifted the glass and took a long drink before putting it back down again. Absent mindedly he traced the rim of the glass with his finger, staring blindly around the nightclub at the other people. They all seemed so happy, dancing, talking, among other things without a care in the world. What he wouldn’t give to be carefree like that again. But ever since that night, ever since that fire almost two years ago he’d realised how hard the world could be and would likely never be the same again. Maybe one day he’d be able to move on but tonight wasn’t that time. Tonight his plan was to just drink until he couldn’t remember what had caused this depression that hung over him every day like a shadow.
