Hella Good (alec)

Sophia hummed softly to herself as she inspected the map of the mall, planning her mode of attack. Her favourite Aunt was getting married in a few weeks and she had nothing to wear. She decided on going to 'Elle' first.

"Come on, Alec, this way" She gestured for him to follow her. It came to mind that maybe she should hold his hand but that idea was scratched quickly. They were married, sure, but they weren't in love they were friends. That's it. Friends.

She settled for walking slightly ahead of him, she wandered the store for at least ten minutes before finding a dress she wanted to try on.
"Hold this please" She dropped her purse into his hand and made her way to the changing room. She didn't feel that she was very high maintenance, hell she hardly even wore makeup but she loved shopping and dressing up.

Sophia quickly slipped out of her skinny jeans and red silk blouse and into the dress. She twirled around in front of the mirror, adjusted certain assets, and took a hair tie off of her wrist and put her hair into a bun and then stepped out of the change room to see if Alec liked it. She would probably get it one way or another but it was nice to have another opinion.

"What do you think?" She asked smiling broadly. The dress was black and hugged her curves deliciously; it was on the short side, only coming to mid thigh with a sweetheart neckline and slits across the back.

Alec woke up at like four in the morning and had not been able to fall back asleep, he laid in his bed thinking of the woman who was sleeping down the hall. He finally pushed the covers off of his body around six in the morning, he left his feet drop to the floor and stood up making his way to the bathroom and then downstairs for coffee. He set foot in the kitchen in only his pajama bottoms and no shirt, his yawned and rubbed his eyes before heading over to make coffee. he looked at the clock and sighed it was his day off and he was still up before sun rise, he took his coffee and settled on to the couch in the living room.

Time had gone by when he woke up and heard movement in the kitchen and realized that Sophia must be up and ready for her day of shopping, she had to find a dress for a family wedding. He was going because she said she needed an opinion of which one looked better on her. He was going to say no at first hell as he got up he was going through reasons in his head as to why he shouldn't go but in the end it came down to she was his wife weather he wanted her to be or not, and that counted above all else in his mind. He headed into the kitchen to put his mug in the sink before running upstairs to take a shower and change, before they were ready to leave.

Once inside the mall he looked around at all the places and sighed to himself as he thought this is going to be one long day and it has not even started yet. He followed Sophia once she decided where she wanted to go first, he didn't walk too close even though he wanted to she seemed to not let him.

He sat there in a chair while she was in the dressing room changing, his mind drifted back to when they first found out that they were to be married. He hated her so much back then because she was a spoiled brat and didn't have to work for a thing unlike himself to had to work with everything, yes his parents were semi rich but they were also old fashioned. he remembered all the fights and the stupid eye rolling which still happens most of the time when they are annoyed with each other, but he realizes at that moment just how much better they have gotten which each other since when they were first married. He smiled when he thought they have somehow become friends as of lately, they have settled comfortably in to a normal or semi normal routine.

Alec was drawn back to the present as she stepped out of the dressing room and his mouth went open and he shook his head. "Hell no" was all he spoke before he stood up and looked at another dress. " Hmm what about ..... no that won't work." He had to admit he wouldn't mind seeing his wife in the dress that she was wearing but he did not think it was right for a wedding unless you were trying to be a hoochie mama and sleep with every other guy and he was not having anyone else stare at his wife like she was a slut. He may not have wanted to be married to her but lately he has become more protective of her almost as if he loved her, and that was what was keeping him up at night the thought that he may be falling in love with his wife.

He looked up at his wife and smiled and just shook his head "Sophia you can try all you want your not getting the dress, my wife is not going in to a wedding in that dress. Your a married woman now find something more to suit that fact.

Sophia stared at him blankly for a moment after he said 'hell no' she looked down then, at herself. She looked great, what the hell was he talking about? Sure it was maybe a little revealing but what kind of response was that.

She was very much aware of their differances, he made it clear everyday. Their parents were close friends but their parenting tactic and financial standing were quite different. Sophia got everything she wanted yes, but her parents controlled her that way. She wasn't dying her hair blond or else she wasn't getting a new phone, and she wasn't going to date or she wouldn't have a credit card. That sort of thing, because of this Sophia really did not have any clear concept of being 'broke' and she hates hates hates being controlled.

"I'll get it if I want to get it" She finally responded quietly. But he seemed not to hear her as he looked through racks of dresses. It was almost funny her life with Alec. When they were kids before cellphones and cars and puperty they were the best of friends, then as they grew up the money gap became a huge issue and they sort of drifted away.

She changed her expression for just a second from anger to one of sadness. Now that they lived together she found herself seeing the good in him. He was funny, charming, and when he wanted to he could be really romantic. If only.... She shook away the thoughts.

"I will wear whatever it is I want to wear. So there.This isn't a real marriage anyway." She folded her arms across her chest and stared at him definatly. She had more to say but she held her tounge, a big scene in public would be just too embarrasing to handle.

Alec looked at her when she spoke about wearing what she wanted, he sighed and shook his head not surprised at all about it. " Go head you do anyway, I am not going to the wedding if you do though."

He walked up to her and leaned down to kiss her cheek before walking over and telling the sales clerk to ring up the dress and put it on his card. Then he left and stood out side of the store, he waited for to be finished. He stood there watching her through the window and saw her smiling it broke his heart, to tell that he was laid off yesterday. He would have to tell her some time soon or she would end up curious as to why he was not working.

Alec was a strong proud man who showed no weakness he learned at an early age how to take care of himself. He looked at her as she came out he was going to tell her now or he wouldn't be able too. Alec saw her come out and spoke, " I lost my job yesterday, so that dress is the last thing I am going to be buying unless needed." He looked at her wondering what she was going to say to him, he sighed knowing that he would have to find another job tomorrow. Alec was not one for change he liked organized and comfortable, so his whole life is about to change again.

Sophia reached up and touched her cheek gently.
What an ASS! She quickly changed out of the dress.Now she felt like the worst person ever, he sounded so terribly sad. It was just a dress for God's sake. Still, she felt like dirt beneath his shoe. She watched him ring up the dress and leave. She quickly found another dress in the same size. This one was a full length red strapless one.

"Can you switch the dresses?" She asked the sales clerk solomly. She agreed because the dresses cost the same amount. She walked out with the bag to Alec. She raised her eyebrows at his news.
"What did you do to get fired" She paused " And why are you so worried? You'll find another job besides we can borrow some money from dad" Sophia was not the least bit worried, her father would have no problem helping them with money until Alec got a new job. Piece of cake. She pulled out the different dress to show him.
"I changed the dress are you happy now?" She stuck out her lip before putting the dress back in the bag. She'd get that other dress eventually though when he wasn't around to make her feel bad.

"Come on let's go, I actually have a pair of shoes at home that will work gorgeously with this dress" She said brightly grabbing his hand on a whim and making a bee line for the exit of the mall.

When she showed him that she changed the dress he shook his head. "Hey don't change it on my account, you want the dress get the dress you like. " He looked at her when she spoke about her having a pair of shoes at home, he nodded and let her drag him to the doors when he stopped. He removed his arm from hers and shook his head, "I am not taking any money from your parents. You can since he is your dad and you get what ever you want anyway but I won't take a cent. You can call it pride or whatever you want I was raised a certain way and I had to work for what I wanted and me loosing my job is not going to stop me from doing that. "

He sighed and frowned before looking at her and trying to smile, " Come on lets just go, and i didn't get fired I got laid off there is a difference, they closed up shop and laid off everyone so no big deal." Alec shook it off and headed for the car which gave him time to think about a few things. he opened up the door for Sophia, and let her climb in before closing it. He started the car and drove off in silence as he made his way towards home, after about ten minutes he was loosing it. "Sophia say something will you anything yell scream anything."

"Why did you bother arguing anyway then?" She murmered crossly.

She listened quietly as he spoke about taking money from her parents and again she felt like dirt. She felt judged. Does he think he was a better person than she is? She looked at her feet all the way to the car and then got in. This was exactly what she was talking about he could be so romantic without even trying. But it doesn't matter in the least because he doesn't love her, hell he dioesn't even LIKE her.
get ahold of yourself She thought angrily, as she did up her seatbelt.

He wasn't ever going to see her as anything but a spoiled brat and she well, she was never going to see him as anything but the husband who hates her. She looked at him for a second after he spoke and then without warning burst into noisy tears.
"I'm so stupid!" She sniffled digging through her purse for a tissue.

He looked at her when she asked him why he was arguing, " Why am I arguing because I care and I don't want everyone to think of you as a bimbo because you wore a dress like one. Look I care okay I don't want you to feel like you have to prove something to someone when you don't. We may not get along all the time but that does not mean that I hate you." He looked at her and then continued driving taking in the silence before he heard her tears and her saying she is stupid.

He sighed and shook his head before pulling the car off to the side of the road, he turned and looked at her . " Sophia what are you talking about your not stupid, how could you think like that." Alec looked at her he could not let her think that about herself, he wouldn't let her think that about herself. " Your not stupid Sophie, stubborn and annoying at times but not stupid. I don't think that anyway, not that you care what I think." He smiled at her and handed her a tissue before taking her hand and giving it a squeeze, " We will get through this together, we always have."

Now through her stubborness she had unintentionally hurt him, why else would such a strong man be pouring out his heart to her? When they fought she said little mean things but never to seriously hurt him.

She continued blinking back tears as he pulled over. Crying like a damn five year old. She hated this sort of crying pointless, no meaning tears with no explaination.

"I -I care" She sniffled "I'm s-stupid because I cry for n-n-no reason" She accepted the tissue and patted her now red and swollen eyes.

"We haven't gotton through anything as a couple yet" She stopped crying as she said the word couple. She looked over at her best friend, her best friend who was gently holding her hand, her best friend who went to grade school with her, who watched MTV with her when they were 13. her best friend who worked during summers while she was partying. Her best friend who she was afraid to love.
"I'm sorry I'm so awful" She twisted up the tissue in her hands and blinked rapidly. no more crying now, really.

" Crying for no reason is not something to call yourself stupid over Sophie, and believe me your not stupid your actually far from it." he was trying to make her feel better about yourself but he knew it was going to take more then his words. he figured it would be better if she didn't know that he was falling for her, he knew that she wasn't ready to face it he wasn't even ready too.

"You care huh well that is new" he said smiling at her just then and he let go of her hand. " Your right we have not faced stuff as a couple, but it can't be any worse they what we have faced in the past right. We will just have to learn to have open communication with each other since we are in this together."

Alec raised his hand and wiped away the tears that remained on her cheeks, " Sophie you are the most beautiful woman I know , just don't tell my mom or she will smack me." he said something stupid to try and make her laugh and then he made a face. " What do you say we go home and have one of those days when we laid in our pajamas and watch old reruns of the old shows, I say we leave our problems for another day and just have fun today."

Her hand felt ridiculously empty as soon as he let it go, like it never held anything before. She closed it and brought it close into her lap.

"I know, It's just" She sighed "Hard sometimes to communicate with you but I geuss I probably just need to try harder" She stuffed the tissue into the small plastic bag she kept in her purse for just such emergancies. When she looked up again he touched her cheek, with such soft delicate motions, like a husband, like a lover.

She smiled a watery smile at him and rubbed her now sore eyes.
"That actually sounds more fun than shopping" Sophia took out her compact and looked at her eyes in the small mirror.
"Oh my god I look atrocious!" She nearly started crying again she looked like a complete wreck.

"Alec do you remember when we were in eleventh grade?" She asked suddenly.

He looked at her he felt guilty for making her cry, he seemed to be doing that a lot lately without meaning too. Now on top of that he lost his job, of course he has money in the bank but not enough to take care of them until he is able to get one. However he was a proud man always had been even as a kid he would never take money that he had not earned himself.

Alec looked at his wife and nodded, " It looks like we could both try harder to talk with each other." Alec started the car up again and headed home with his wife in the passenger side, he parked in the garage and looked at his wife when she asked him a question. " What do you mean do I remember, of course I do."
Alec smiled at his wife and got out of the car, he then walked around to her side and opened her door helping her out.

"So what ever happened with that asshole ex boyfriend of yours? I remember him hitting you and cheating on you, I also remember putting him in the hospital for doing those things." Alec smiled at her he also leaned down to kiss her cheek at that moment. Alec was surprised at how much he was starting to care for the woman standing in front of him. " Why do you think I forgot about what happen then. That was the first day you turned to me when you needed help, I doubt it will be the last."

"or maybe we need a marriage counsler" She suggested, hoping he could hear the joke in her voice.

"Oh, I was talking to amy the other day and she says hes in jail for moving cocaine" She shrugged not really wanting to talk about him. He had been her first boyfriend. She had of course hidden him from her parents who would have absoulutly flipped had they known. Right after their three month anniversary he became abusive. Everyone seemed to believe her when she said she just fell alot. She stayed with him simply because she didn't want to have to admit to her friends that it was a mistake. She also found out after their year anniversary that he had been cheating.

She couldn't help but touch her cheek after he kissed her there. The night she found out he had been cheating, he beat her worse than ever. For whatever reason she drove to Alec's house. She had a twisted ankle, broken wrist, two black eyes and a fat lip.

"Shit" She rubbed her shoulders " I was so scared he was gonna kill me that night, you know how much I hate asking for help, but I had to" She blurted all this out and blushed. Why was she sharing so deeply with him hell, why was she reminising with him.

He would leave her as soon as their parents died, he cared for her but probably as a sister, how could he love her, she was damaged goods.
