Becca hadn't been having the best of days. In fact, that was pretty much an understatement. After the bad thunderstorm the night Demetri came he had found her crying in a corner. After trying to console her she basically blurted out she'd screwed everything up. When he had questioned her she finally broke down and admitted she was pregnant. Demetri had, in turned, freaked out. His exact words were burned into Becca's memory; "Oh, great, another one of your problems we have to deal with.". The memory stung her even still. Then her parents had found she was pregnant when her mom caught her changing. That had led to a very loud argument in which Becca was kicked out of the house. She had remained homeless for two weeks before her British Angel saved her.
A man named Dr. John Watson had been so nice to her when he found her having an anxiety attack in the park. After explaining her situation he offered to let her move in with her and his "flatmate" Julian Holmes. At first she was apprehensive about moving in with them. But Dr. Watson refused to let a four and a half month pregnant teenager live out of a hearse and starve. So, she'd packed up what she had and moved in. Julian was less than enthused at the idea and was rather rude to her at first. But eventually they came to a general no-talking consensus. The last week had been rather rough as she had recently spoken to Demetri in the chat. He made it clear he wasn't coming back to her. And really, could she blame him?
Then something amazing had happened. She'd gotten a text on her cell (thankfully Julian had managed to get her number switched over to their plan) from one of her friends from school. A handsome, artsy boy named Danny. Becca had always secretly had a crush on him, but she'd never had the guts to make the move. Then she'd gotten with Demetri and...well, her belly showed what happened. They'd talked back and forth, John making the comment he was glad to see her behaving like a normal teenager, and finally made plans. Today she was supposed to be meeting him at the cafe to get coffee and talk. Early that morning she had gotten up and bleached her hair, dying it purple and blue.
It was a stance that she was taking control of her own life and was making a fresh start. She blow dryed her hair and came out with a big, Jack Skellington towel wrapped around her. Steam rolled out of the bathroom and she crept into the kitchen to get some sour patch kids (her craving), thinking no one was home. John came out of the guest bedroom and his eyes widened at her hair.
"Oh-oh my. Becca, what did you do to your hair?!" John asked panickedly "D-do you like it? I wanted to make a fresh start." Becca said quietly, her face worried. "It's...colorful. Nice to see something other than black, I suppose! It's pretty, goes nicely with your eyes." He joked before smiling. "Really? Oh, John! She walked over and gave him a quick hug, "You don't know how much that means coming from you. I'm gonna go get dressed. I'm meeting Danny at the cafe! "I'd tell you to be good, but you are kind of pregnant. Not much you can get into now! I'd like to meet Danny soon, if it becomes....serious." He cleared his throat awkwardly, obviously not due to a fatherly role. "Of course, John! Maybe I can invite him for dinner one night. I'll be home no later than five, okay?" Becca smiled happily, for the first time in weeks, before she walked back to her bedroom.
In the same way she dyed her hair wanting to make a new start she decided to wear something other than all black. Becca toweled off and slipped into her underclothes before slipping on her purple shirt with a dinosaur on the front and 'Vegetarian' scrawled on it. She paired it with a pretty, delicate black skirt and matching purple tights. After sliding her feet into a pair of sparkly, black Converse (it was impossible for her to run around in 5" platform boots anymore) she brushed her hair and secured it up messily with a claw-clip. She applied on dark eyeshadow and left her lips nude aside from her mango-flavored chapstick. She quickly painted her nails the same color purple as her shirt and grabbed her phone and her coffin-shaped purse. When her nails were dry she slipped on her lace fingerless gloves, bracelets, a necklace, and earrings.
As she came walking back into the living room, hair now left loose around her face, John looked up from his paper. Julian was hunched over the dinette table staring into a microscope, though he flicked his gaze up at her for a moment. Becca did a little spin when John looked over at her and got a nervous grin from the older man. Becca smiled back at him and grabbed her car keys from the dinette. It was only then Julian actually noticed her. He stared at her with a smug expression and shook his head, laughing under his breath.
"What's so funny, Julian?" Becca said with a level stare. "Your hair looks ridiculous. Are you trying to draw more attention to the fact you are seventeen and pregnant?" Julian said, raising an eyebrow. "Julian!" The retired army doctor's warning tone came from the couch. "Oh, I'm sorry, Mr. Holmes. I do forget you can be such a prick. I'll have you know I'm making a new start in my life. Now if you'll kindly shut your mouth, I'll be on my way." A dangerous, venmous note was in her voice before she turned on her heel and stomped out the door.
Becca's drive over to the cafe was short and uneventful. She texted Danny to let him know she'd arrived and took a deep breath. She managed to get open the door and spotted Danny in the back. A smile lit up her pale face as she carefully skirted tables and arrived at the back booth.
"Hey, Danny! I hope you weren't waiting long?" She said softly, hugging him before sitting down.
