I can't feel the way I did before Don't turn your back on me, I won't be ignored Time won't heal this damage anymoreDon't turn your back on me, I won't be ignored With a careful eye and steady hands, Kayla painted a neat line of white across the tip of her thumbnail. Unwilling to go downstairs and join in the cooing and awing over her sister’s bump, painting her nails seemed to be Kayla’s best alternative right now to keep her mind occupied. She stared in concentration as she moved onto the index finger, repeating the slick movement of the brush to leave her with a pretty decent looking frenchie. Carrying on the repetitive task across her hand, Kayla eventually let out a sigh as she finished. Curling over her fingers and approving the job, she replaced the lid onto the nail varnish bottle and slumped back onto her bed, holding her arms up at an awkward angle to stop herself from accidentally smudging the manicure on the duvet.
Lying there in the quiet room, Kayla could hear the giggles and squealing coming from the baby shower downstairs. She rolled her eyes a little, wondering why quite such a fuss needed to be made of it all. Addie had been fussed over this whole pregnancy. In fact she had been fussed over her whole life. But no, she still needed a day devoted entirely to celebrating the fact she could drunkenly shag her best friend and then carry his baby for nine months without telling him. What an achievement, hey..
Kayla sighed again, thinking she was perhaps being a little harsh. Bitchiness wasn’t really part of her personality but recently things had been pretty bad between the twins and Kayla often found herself uncharacteristically scorning her sister. Hating on the fact Addie got all the attention, hating on the fact Addie and the baby were all anybody wanted to talk about. Most of all however, and the issue which had caused all of these deeper ones to come to the surface; hating on the fact Addie had slept with Teddy and kept quiet about it.
See Kayla had always found it difficult to deal with Addie being the perceived centre of attention or favoured twin. Always found it difficult to be the wingwoman to Addie’s starring role. But she had always kept quiet about things- silently dealt with being the second best without ever letting on to Addie how rubbish she felt. But the revelation about Teddy had tipped everything well past breaking point. To know not only that her boyfriend had picked her as runner up prize to her sister but also that her own twin could keep something like that from her had ended Kayla’s days of hiding her resentment for the situation. She now full on sulked, acting at least decently to Addie but not putting herself out in any way to be friendly.
See Kayla had always been a nice, loving and forgiving sort of girl, but eventually all girls have their limits. And hers was clearly having her worst fears about being second best confirmed at the same time as finding out your sister can let you fall in love and the get your heart broken without ever thinking to step in and reveal the important truth about the object of your desires. And now this limit had been reached, Kayla was in no hurry to forgive, forget or get on with things. She closed her eyes as she lay on her bed, her mind picking through all of the thoughts and worries she held.
Hearing the door slam downstairs a while later, Kayla’s eyes flickered open. Not even realising she had fallen asleep, she looked somewhat quizzically at the clock, noting it had been nearly an hour since she had last looked at it. She yawned loudly but made no effort to move, all warm and snuggy lying here on her duvet. Plus the longer she stayed here, the longer she could put off traipsing through the mountains of delicately wrapped babygros and bibs which would no doubt be littering every surface downstairs.
Kayla stared up at the ceiling, considering this thought as she began to hear footsteps padding up the stairs. Diverting her gaze over to the door, Kayla traced the footsteps from their sound, noting them reaching the top of the stairs and begin to head towards her room. Addie? Nobody else was in, but Kayla couldn’t help but wonder why Addie would be coming towards her room. Well, apart from the obvious reason that Kayla had sulked upstairs for the entirety of Addie’s baby shower. But seeing as Kayla didn’t particularly see herself in the wrong for this, she was still slightly confused by the quickly approaching footsteps.

[/style] [atrb=border,0,true] "... I mean it, you really outdid yourself. The safari theme was so cute! And don't even get me started on..."
Addie shifted awkwardly, leaning against the open door as her mother's best friend, Karen, gabbed on and on to her mother. Her baby shower had come to a close a while ago. But Karen, as always, remained here long after the rest of the crowd had drifted out. Karen and her mother had plans of some sort now, but it seemed that they would never leave. Addie really just wanted them to go already. She was sick of the baby shower, sick of the baby talk, and just sick of everything. Half of Lipton showed up here it seemed, and, though she knew she should be grateful, Addie had issues with being happy for it. It was great of so many of them to show up, it really was, but none of them really mattered that much to her. She had spent the entire baby shower glaring at a stuffed giraffe that her mother had sat on the chair next to her. A chair that had originally been set out for Mikayla.
How could she just not show up to her twin sister's baby shower? They had been having some rough patches lately, sure, but was that really any excuse? Addie would have shown up if their situations had been reversed. Or, at least, she liked to think that she would have shown up. Mikayla was a lot more dedicated to the family than she was, so Addie really didn't get it. What was Kayla's problem? Had she really done anything that bad? She had slept with some guy that Kayla had dated. They weren't together at the time. She had him first. Kayla should have known better than to fall for a partier...
Addie's small debate in her head came to an abrupt stop as she felt a sharp elbow to her side. "Adelaide." Her mother's voice came sharp and Addie quickly turned to glare at her mother. "Karen asked you a question." Seeing Karen's gaze staring at her, the teen gave a forced smile. What could she have possibly asked? "Sorry, I... what?" Addie could hear her mother give an exasperated sigh from next to her, but Karen just brushed it off, repeating her words once more.Everything from 'take care of yourself' to 'what did you say you were naming the baby' and then back to 'get plenty of sleep!' came. Addie forced a smile once more, repositioning herself by the door and casually opening it a little wider as she did so. "Savannah. Her name is Savannah."
Karen giggled with delight, commenting on the cuteness of the name once more as she turned to leave with Addie's mother. Addie didn't even bother to nod, instead just waving as the two women made their way down the sidewalk. Once they had piled into Karen's car, Addie stepped back from the door. "Thank god." The door slammed rather harshly now as Addie started back down the littered hallway. Various strips of safari and baby themed wrapping papers littered the entire downstairs. What wasn't covered in wrapping paper was covered in various baby necessities, scraps of food, or confetti. Her mother had gone all out on this baby shower. Addie couldn't help but to groan inwardly at the idea of cleaning it all up later. It would take weeks.
But, that's what her brother, dad, and sister were for. Her brother and dad would be home later in the day from their fishing trip and they could deal with the mess. It was no longer her problem. So, her gaze shifted up stairs. Mikayla still hadn't bothered to come downstairs and it was really starting to annoy her. It was just the two of them now. At any other time this would have been no big deal, but right now it was. Addie trudged up the stairs rather quickly. Then, made the short walk down the hallway to where the doors to her room, Mikayla's room, and their bathroom were neatly lined.
She paused there for just a second, momentarily considering her actions. One part of her, the lesser part, was telling her to just keep walking to her own bedroom and to just ignore Kayla. She would come to her senses. The other part, and the more dominant part of Addie's personality, was telling her to barge in. Just let Mikayla have it. With each passing second, Addie found the second part winning out over the first. And, so, without any further hesitation, Addie shoved open the door to Mikayla's room and stepped in. "What the hell, Mikayla? What was so freaking important that you couldn't be bothered to show up to my baby shower?"

I can't feel the way I did before Don't turn your back on me, I won't be ignored Time won't heal this damage anymoreDon't turn your back on me, I won't be ignored Kayla had been kidding herself to think that the impending footsteps could be anybody other than her sister. One of the oddities of family life is the fact that each member can recognise the distinctive walks of the others up the stairs, giving perhaps some kind of advanced warning to each person as to whom was about to lay into them. The slightly pregnancy-strained struggle up the stairs had to be Addie, however much Kayla tried to stay in denial that her sister wouldn’t confront her over this incident. And, as the door swung open and a face of pure thunder barged in, Kayla’s suspicions were confirmed. Having already been staring at the door, Mikayla now stared straight at Adelaide, a kind of blank and emotionless stare. She wasn’t going to roll over and apologise as soon as her sister got the huff, yet she wasn’t in the place to go off at Addie before she’d even heard what she had to say. Kayla diverted her gaze away from Addie as she began to shout her thoughts, looking aimlessly at a wall as the frustration built up within her. How did Addie have the cheek to say this? Did she really expect Kayla to just play happy families?
As soon as Addie stopped talking, Kayla snapped back. For the girl who avoided arguments and preferred to just apologise for whatever had happened, the speed and anger of her comeback was quite uncharacteristic. ”Oh sorry, did you not have enough people down there showering you in attention Addie?” Her words were bitter and full of the jealous resentment she had held back all these years. She looked down at her freshly painted nails, as some sort of subconscious indication to Addie that she saw her French manicure as more important than the events downstairs before looking back up again with a determined glare, keen not to look like she was surrendering.
This painfully awkward situation was a stark contrast to the day Addie first revealed her pregnancy. When Kayla had wrapped her sister in love and told her that she would support her and be there for her always. The sickly sweetness of their friendship and the hopeful naivety of Kayla’s spirit seemed all but gone now as the girls stared at each other through the tension. And because of what, one had to question. Was some cocky guy really worth this?
Apparently Kayla seemed to think so. Her mind was set and with her first fierce words spoken, there was no backing down. ”And what makes your baby shower so important anyway?!” She piped up again “Oh let’s all have a party to celebrate Addie shall we?” she continued mockingly ”Cause it’s not like she’s treated like a damn princess every day of her life anyway” This was strangely therapeutic Kayla thought, as she let go of the nice girl and began to pour out her innermost thoughts in a wave of spiteful rants. Perhaps rather than storing everything up she should do this more often.
